In which the Sphinx is mistaken for somebody else
Away from the shade of the flat topped tree, the sun bore down hotly. Bombshell relaxed in his recliner, watching the wind ripple the thick long grass on the slope below like waves on an ocean.
Lower in the valley, animals moved in clusters, a large herd of the black and white striped creatures, and the antlered variety with the long legs. A short distance away, one of the meat eaters with the manes was stalking the striped ones. It should mean some entertainment soon.
Although, as Bombshell ‘s optics shifted to the other recliner and the antlered insecticon form on that, the beetle decided that maybe more entertaining things than organic bloodshed might be in order. He ran his optics down the beautifully proportioned form. Oh how nice it was to have Shrapnel to himself for a change!
As though reading his mind, the other insecticon unshuttered one optic. “Any word from Kickback, Kickback?” he asked.
“No,” Bombshell cleared his throat. “You know how much he likes to go off on his own sometimes! He went north, to the desert lands.” He sat up, his horn twitching. “I thought that maybe we could take this opportunity ....”
But he got no further. There was a loud buzzing from behind, accompanied by the sound of clanking metal and furiously strumming wings. The ground vibrated with a ‘thud’ as Kickback landed. “Bombshell, Shrapnel! Get up out of those chairs!” he yelled. “This is an emergency!”
And now the animals had seen them. Long necks were stretched, startled faces turned their way. A steady thrumming began, growing in volume, the ground shaking as the occupants of the valley took off in droves.
“Why Kickback, we were just talking about you you!” Shrapnel ignored the spectacle.
Leaning back, Bombshell, sighed. “We were indeed,” he said. “And speculating on the reason for your absence. Now what seems to be the trouble, Kickback?"
But the grasshopper was beside himself. “How can you just lie there like that?” he exploded. “Don’t you realize how important this is? The humans have finished that thing they were building. And guess what - it’s Megatron!”
…………………
“It’s just a statue, Kickback! Why, it doesn't even look like him!”
Kickback looked at the humans thronging around the large edifice, and the mighty pyramid beyond.
“But it IS him! I reckon he’s in that city, secretly ruling this lot! See how there’s all those slaves out there? It was him! He made them build it!”
Shrapnel turned to Bombshell. “There is a small amount of resemblance resemblance,” he said. “This might be worth checking out, out!”
“See?” Kickback chirped, greatly encouraged. “Just cos you’ve got this theory, Bombshell, that the Nemesis got destroyed! I reckon it didn’t at all. They’re probably all in this place, working together!“
“Some of the more important humans do wear headgear which is quite Megatron like, like” Shrapnel observed.
Bombshell considered. His fellow insecticons did have a point. And if it were true, then the implications could be – rather challenging. And also quite rewarding. But he needed time to make proper investigations; to think, to plan a strategy.
“The Nemesis was destroyed in space, we passed the remnants of its disintegration if you recall, Kickback,” Bombshell said. “And even if your theory that the Decepticons somehow got aboard the Ark is correct, we have found no trace of that in all our long eons here. It is time you stopped your wild speculations. We are alone here.”
Kickback pouted. “You just never listen to my theories!” he protested. “Well I don’t care! I reckon he IS here. And I’m gonna make him come out. Watch this!”
“KICKBACK!” Bombshell shouted as the cybercrickit transformed and took off, heading for the pyramid.
“Oh good, good!” Shrapnel said, “A Kickback show, show!”
………
They watched as Kickback slid down the pyramid slope in alt mode for the fourth time, dust flying, metal squealing and graunching as sparks flew from around his frame. He landed with a crash at the base and then, laughing, took off again, heading for the summit.
There was not a human to be seen, royalty and slaves alike having fled in terror at the Insecticon’s arrival.
“I must admit, I am beginning to agree with you, you,” Shrapnel said. “If Megatron was here somewhere he would have come out by now, now, surely, surely!”
“Indeed,” Bombshell nodded. “I think I was right, Shrapnel. I don’t think the natives used him as a model. Nevertheless, I must confess to a strange hunch. This is a big planet. Although it is against all odds, I would not be surprised to encounter him here alive, somewhere.”
“Then we should take precautions, precautions, “ Shrapnel said. “There is no telling how he will react to us following his ship, ship. And finding this world, world. And emerging unscathed from our own crash, crash.”
“Perhaps if we dig out our Decepticon armour, Shrapnel, it would be advisable to wear it from now on. “ Bombshell said.
But Shrapnel wasn’t listening. “Look, look!” he said.
………………
Creeping slowly towards the maned creature statue with the Megatron head came an uncountable number of humans. Their hands were raised, as a loud wailing came from their midst. As they drew closer, the frontrunners got to their knees, burying their faces in the ground as the wailing grew louder. The following masses gradually followed suit.
Atop the head of the Sphinx, Kickback shifted his position, his alt mode glinting in the setting Earth sun. He was rather pleased. However great Bombshell and Shrapnel thought themselves, neither had ever been treated as a deity. It kinda made up for perhaps not being quite right about the source of the statue’s inspiration.
Down on the ground, Shrapnel turned to Bombshell. “Whatever happens, I’m sure we can get some mileage out of this, this,” he said.
Bombshell could only nod in agreement.
